Hi
I have been receiving a lot of queries regarding M.Sc Economics programme at IIT Kanpur and M.Sc Economics in general.
First reaction of all the people who see this in the brochure or to whoever I tell is that how come there is an economics programme at a technical institute like IITs.
You can go through the brochure for stuff like it is a perfect blend of technology and economics and similar stuffs, half of which is crap. Some will even try to portray it as a substitute for B.Tech+MBA which is not a very true picture
COURSE DESIGN
In the first couple of years, out of nearly 20 courses, 15 are like same for all streams of science and engineering, there are 2 electives and 3 department specific courses.
From third year onwards, the focus shift towards economics. We are required to take 5 courses per semester inclusive of the electives. One kind of electives is H.S.S. i.e. Humanities and Social Sciences where you take courses from Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Literature, etc. It may sound very attractive but its going to be find very boring and dont think of high sci-fi stuffs. The M.Sc(int) Economics programme comes under Department of H.S.S.
Before I go futher let me explain concept of electives. In IITs(at least Kanpur), you have an option of doing courses of your liking from any Department you desire. In the M.Sc economics programme there are around 7 open electives(courses from any department) and around 6 departmental electives(courses from economics itself...though there are not much choices available within the economics department due to lack of Professors)
The course structure is very good and I find the subject interesting as well. But the problem is the quality and number of Professors although both have been improving lately with new recruits. I believe the courses detail could be found on the net, if unable to find, drop me a mail. You can read all the stuff like Micro economics, Macro Economics, Econometrics, etc although whether you will read them or not is highly questionable once you get here :) This is very new Programme so there are ample of scope of improvement.
COMPARED WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES
Another question which I am asked is, "I have rank around 3000, should I take Maths or economics." I would say that has to an individual decision. Maths department at IIT Kanpur is very good but its very very tough also. What you are going to study here is going to be very different from JEE. Based on your interest in Maths in High School, if you decide to take Maths, you may find yourself at the wrong place. I would recommend that people who have ranks around 2000 should not blindly follow into the foot steps of last year pattern and end up in a stream of not their liking.
BRANCH CHANGE & CULTURE
Everyone in IIT comes with a thought that I will study hard in first year and change my branch to Computer Science and Electrical. Mark my words,"Don't count on that." You are not going to have the same enthusiasm for studies like you had at time of JEE. Most of us for the first time will be exposed to a plethora of activities which happens in campus. Be it sports, cultural or technical, you are sure to find something that suits you. There is a high probability that you will be diverted from studies although if you really interested, you will get very good oppurtunity to study anything you like. The institute has a huge library and has access to many online journals.
PLACEMENTS
The first batch of Economics graduated this year. All the 13 people who sat for placements were placed and at a package much better than the institute's average. People have mostly opted for investment banks, consultancy although some are going into research institutes. A couple of people are appearing for Civil Services Examinations. Further options include going for PhD, MBA, none of which should matter to someone who has just cleared JEE. People don't figure that out until their last year so you need not be concerned at all at this moment of time.
If you have any other queries, feel free to mail me at rathi.rocking@gmail.com . I am genrally very lazy to reply, one of the reason why i wrote this, but I would try to reply at the earliest.
The above was my opinion and you may get totally different perspective if you come in contact with some of my friends from economics. I would actually recommend that you try to get in touch with other people as that will help in getting a broader view

Hemant Rathi

good work rathi,
ReplyDeleteI would say if you are tired of study during your JEE preparation, simply opt for Economics.... no course load, no extra burden.............you will get time to involve in any extra curricular activity... sports , culture etc.. if you are not serious towards study anymore, take economics and enjoy your college life
i dont think economics is that easy...
DeleteUmm..have you ever studied Economics beyond school? :)
Deletenice one rathi... but special appreciation to some prof like pmp missing because of whom our department is progressing so much :P :P , otherwise I totally concur with what all crap you wrote.. all true ;)
ReplyDeleteby the ways... for kids, Rathi is one of the guys who got internship in Deustch bank, one of the topmost recruiters of IITK.
Don't take Maths!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIts hell. Its considered a really big deal if you can get out in 5 years without any F in any course.
But yeah there are few others (I mean really few as in 5 out of 35) who score nice marks and rare ones as in 1 in 2 year batches who manages to score top notch in all courses. But those are gifted people. If you consider yourself gifted take maths. Otherwise for a enjoyable life come to Eco baby!!! Here we Rock,n Roll!! :D
More than anything else, i really enjoyed ur manner of writing... Gud work!!!
ReplyDeletewell done Rathi !
ReplyDeleteTo add, if someone needs an insight into Why not to take MATHS, can feel free to contact me.. :P
Cheers!!
My opinion regarding eco:
ReplyDeleteFaculty:
Some of prof are good...though we dont have sufficient faculty but its all right...some of faculty is really bad,eg pmp(no knowledge and
no iq)gud thng is such faculty doent take imp courses....so overall its ok..one can have gud knowledge in economics if one is sincere..
About economics as a branch 4r jobs:
Its better than phy/chm/bsbe.....but
its harder to get job in eco than in other engg courses(getting job
through campus placement is not easy at all but if u keep trying u can get
it)....basically people go to investment bank/and other jobs related to
finance...or thy may do phd/IAS/MBA.....getting phd is easy in
europe/usa...and getting internship is also easy.....ofcourse if one tries sincerly
Frustation:
Some courses require rote learning...too much information to swallow...
Between math and eco:
Maths is really tough here..its easy to make branch change in maths after 3 sems...so if u r nt sure between maths n eco...try eco n see if u can handle maths here 4r 1st two sems...if u find urself gud in maths thn u can change ur branch....
So,my opinion is if u r getting proper engg course in any iit ,it bhu where placement is gud thn dont take economics ...coz it will lead
to only financial sector wch some ppl dnt like....
I am posting a doubt of a qualified student. Plz respond.

Nipun Khemaka:
Thanks for your lively response.. one thing more I want to confirm. IIT kharagpur offers a minor branch in M.Sc economics not given by IIT Kanpur. Is it so? nd should I prefer IITK or Kharagpur.
is it so that branch upgrading after 1 year is easier in IIT Kharagpur rhan Kanpur.
Hi Nipun,
ReplyDeleteI will also answer relating your secondary doubts: IIT kharagpur offers a minor branch in M.Sc economics not given by IIT Kanpur. Is it so? nd should I prefer IITK or Kharagpur.
is it so that branch upgrading after 1 year is easier in IIT Kharagpur than Kanpur
Firstly, yes the program is way different than that of DU. Because I talk of not just the content/reference texts/courses, but rather the whole package being offered. Here you get IITK networking, IITK brand, great infrastructural facilities (better that all IITs), a plethora of opportunities both academic as well as non-academic. You can pursue your interests other that the academics too (I am specifically telling this as people outside never think of this). Apart from this you can also utilise various synergies that exists with other disciplines like CSE, Mech. Optimization, MBA finance. Another important thing to consider is that IIT does open gates to a hell lot of prestigious organisations both academic as well as companies, some of which wouldn't let your application beyond round one. I have personally seen this so believe me. IIT brand matters a lot! (Not the new IIT Rajasthan or others though...atleast not yet)
Now to compare DU Eco. or for that matter any other stream with IITK Economics. If you want a good finance job with high pay, well then IITK opens a lot of gates in finance with sky-high salalries but you need to do well academically (which seems easy before entering but is pretty cumbersome once you get in).
For other non-core jobs like consulting, one of my friends got an excellent job right after 3 years in Stephens which is not too far from what you may get in consulting after 5 years here. But you have to be profilic (She was topper in Maths Hons., and very smart). Basically if you have confidence to excel in DU and are getting admission into top colleges go for it. It will give you 2 extra years. But if you want more security and have some doubts go for IITK economics.
As you may have heard, once you get in IIT (top 7 at least) you don't need to worry about job (Of course I expect you won't totally destroy your academic record, which some people do here by the way).
Choosing branch depends a lot on interest. Read the articles by Professor Sanghi: http://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/~dheera(j)
http://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/~dheeraj/ideas/jee-counsel. html
These are a little old, but will be very helpful in clarifying what really matters, as currently you have no idea what each branch holds in store for you.
As for you branch change concern, yes probably IIT Kharagpur should be easier place for it (statistically, as there are many more seats, though so many more people too). Contact someone from IIT Kharagpur program (which I assume you must have already).
Changing branch to the always desired CSE or EE will be very difficult, thoughto chemical, civil, mechanical may be easier but there are complications in the rules. SO you have to score highest grades (believe me it is not as easy as you must be thinking now being a school topper, think ten times hard and you get an idea).
Branch change in IIT Kanpur is difficult.
And most importantly IIT Kanpur has the most rigorous academic syllabus, courses (Economics being a new discipline so not as rigorous as others, but compulsory core courses require a lot).
As a final word, it would be best if you can have a one-on-one conversation with some IITian before counselling to clear a lot of myths and get a fair idea of what is actually on offer.
Do consider all the aspects in fair detail and take your own decision. Finally it should be your choice and not someone else's, as it will be you has to live with it for next few years.
Feel free to contact faculty for any doubts.
I strongly recommend, do speak with someone who has been through it before counselling.
All the Best.
Best Regards,
Abhishek Malik
Thank you Malik for your views. I am very sure it will be very helpful for the people
